Do You Need a License to Rent a Boat in Miami?
Short answer: not if your charter comes with a captain. If you plan to drive the boat yourself, Florida law may require a safety card. Here is exactly who needs what.

The short answer
Florida does not issue a boating license. What it has is the Boating Safety Education Identification Card, and whether you need one depends on a single question: who is driving?
- A licensed captain drives: nobody in your group needs a card, a license or any experience. This is how every Miami Yacht Collective charter runs.
- You drive: if you were born on or after January 1, 1988, Florida requires you to carry the card and a photo ID to operate any boat with an engine of 10 horsepower or more.
Who needs the Boating Safety Education ID Card
The rule is set by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). It applies to the person operating the boat, not to passengers, and it applies to visitors as well as Florida residents.
| Your situation | What you need |
|---|---|
| Guest on a captained charter | Nothing |
| Driving a rental boat, born before January 1, 1988 | No card required |
| Driving a rental boat, born on or after January 1, 1988 | Boating Safety Education ID Card (or temporary certificate) and photo ID |
| Visiting from another state with a boating safety card | A card from a NASBLA-approved course is accepted in Florida |
To get the card you complete an FWC-approved boating safety course and pass its exam. The card does not expire.
The temporary certificate for visitors
If you are in Miami for a few days and want to drive a rental boat yourself, there is a faster route: the Temporary Boating Safety Certificate. You take a short test, online or through an approved vendor, and the certificate is valid for 90 days. Most self-drive rental operators in Miami will point you to it before they hand over the keys.
Jet skis follow the same rule
A jet ski is a boat under Florida law, so the same card requirement applies to anyone born in 1988 or later. There are age limits on top of that: you must be at least 14 to operate a personal watercraft in Florida and at least 18 to rent one.
Our 48' Isabella comes with a jet ski included. Tell us who plans to ride when you book and we will tell you what each rider needs to bring.
Why most groups skip the paperwork
Biscayne Bay looks simple from the shore. On the water it is shallow flats, marked channels, manatee zones and no-wake zones, with heavy traffic on weekends. A captain who runs it every day knows where the water is deep enough, where the sandbar is good at today's tide and how to get you back to the dock on time.
That is why every charter in our fleet includes a licensed captain and crew in the price. You step on, and the only thing you are responsible for is the playlist. Compare rates for all nine boats on the price guide, or read what to bring on a charter.
